lighting is often taken for granted as a dreary but practical necessity- especially in urban spaces. When the Mile End Park Partnership asked the Design Lab to illuminate the new Mile End Bridge in Whitechapel, London, we were more than happy to come up with some bright ideas to turn a functional pedestrian fixture into an eye-catching streetscape that would turn the head of any passer-by. With 13 metre high carbon fibre masts embedded with fibre-optic filaments to vertically align both sides of the bridge, the structure, once built, will sway gently, generating plumes of light through refracting lenses in a display of mobile light traces. The Soft Hairy Bridge awaits completion, pending lottery funding.
