The design lab was selected together with fellow team members make architects, Arup, Archicafe and Davis Langdon, as one of six finalists in the Halley VI International design competition. Devised by the British Antarctic Survey and RIBA, to design the next Antarctic research station, to be built to research scientific issues such as global warming. Entrants were challenged to find an innovative, architectural solution for a self-sufficient station that is able to withstand extreme Antarctic weather of gale force winds, heavy snowfall and temperatures of -55C. The design lab collaborated with a holistic design approach and were involved in all areas from the initial concept design, with primary responsibility for the evolution of the interiors. Garden space and hydroponics reflected a specific concern to create a sense of “place” in this extreme environment.
